Nordisk Sikkerhet AS is working with FSUE Atomflot, the owner and operator of Russian nuclear-powered icebreakers and special vessels, to improve security at Atomflot's facilities near the city of Murmansk. This project is being implemented in support of commitments by the Russian Federation to remove spent nuclear fuel (SNF) from former military bases at Andreeva Bay and Gremikha.

The project involves upgrading existing physical protection systems (PPS) and installing new PPS at the nuclear-island area of FSUE Atomflot, which includes all facilities and equipment for handling nuclear fuel, radioactive waste. and ionizing radiation sources. The nuclear island plays a pivotal role in the removal of SNF from Andreeva Bay and Gremikha, which began in June 2017 and will continue for several years. It is therefore crucial that an appropriate level of modern PPS is in place in order to ensure that radiological and nuclear materials do not end up in the wrong hands.

The project is supported by the Norwegian government and fits in the geographical area of the Norwegian Government Action Plan for Nuclear Activities and the Environment in the Northern Areas for 2013-2017, which covers projects and activities in the north-west of Russia and in the former Soviet Union (FSU).
